News: Salvia Divinorum

Native to Mexico and still grown there, salvia divinorum is generally smoked but can also be chewed or made into a tea and drunk. Salvia divinorum’s short-lasting effects and fact that it is currently legal may make it seem more appealing to teens, lawmakers say. In the Delaware suicide, the boy's mother told reporters that salvia divinorum made his mood darker but he justified its use by citing its legality. According to reports, the autopsy found no traces of the drug in his system.

Teens and college students often make the mistake of "trying anything once." But that policy and a powerful herb for sale on the Internet could prove a deadly combination.
It's called "salvia," an herb from the mint family. University of Florida pharmacy experts say salvia divinorum is gaining popularity with the recreational drug users. One woman, we'll call her "Alexia," used the drug once, and that was enough.
"When it first hits you, it's like euphoric, reality changes, it's a trip, but it's not like acid, it's a lot different."
But neither users nor scientists have a handle on the herb's potential dangers. Salvia is a plant native to mexico that apparently causes hallucinations similar to those experienced with L-S-D. And although salvia is not classified as a controlled substance, drug experts stress that just because a drug is made available online it's by no means safe.
"I would see it as a roll of the dice. A person who chooses to use salvia is taking a huge risk in my opinion because of what we don't know about the long term effects of this drug," said Dr. Paul Doering who is with the University of Florida.
Finding salvia is easy enough, simply log onto the internet and there are plenty of vendors, promising "high potency." Too "high" for some college students.
"I've talked to some college students who've used this drug and they've flat out told me, "Never again!" said Dr. Doering.
Pharmacists have little information on how many people are using salvia. But they say the numbers are likely on the rise. Research indicates that only one in ten users who bought and sued salvia off the internet came back to make a second purchase.
Experts say this shows the drug's unpredictability among individual users.
As far as the party scene, "Alexia" advises salvia is not the path for a good time.
"If you use it as a party drug, they're going to be abusing it, using too much of it, you really shouldn't drive when you're using it, it changes reality."

Then things started to turn bad .... Her agitation caused her to bite off a 1/2-inch-by- 1/2-inch part of her tongue, which she aspirated, requiring tracheal intubation and ventilation. She developed elevated temperature, a drop in blood pressure and a rigid abdomen. An X-ray showed signs of peritonitis. An exploration of her abdomen disclosed several necrotic (dead, dying) areas of her small intestine and colon, requiring surgical removal of the affected parts. After a long hospitalization, which included decreasing doses of anti-psychotic drugs, her psychotic symptoms resolved and she was discharged in a psychiatrically stable condition. The young woman and her parents have since instituted legal proceedings against her former boyfriend, accusing him of dosing her with Salvia divinorum.

Few users of Salvia divinorum will ever undergo the horrors described above. But psychedelic drugs are especially dangerous for individuals who are psychologically unstable or not yet fully matured emotionally, for example, teenagers. These dangers are multiplied many times when a person is "dosed" and doesn't realize that the resultant strange perceptual effects are drug induced. The "dosed" victim may then experience a prolonged psychotic reaction, especially if predisposed to mental illness.

Salvia divinorum is a psychoactive plant in the Labiatae family (sometimes called the "mint family"). So far as is known, it is endemic only to the Mazatec region of the Sierra Madre mountains in Oaxaca, Mexico, also known as the Sierra Mazateca (Ott 1996). Some Mazatec curanderos and curanderas (medicine men and women, frequently referred to as shamans) use S. divinorum as an aid to prophecy in healing rituals. The plant's species name, "divinorum", is said to mean "of the seer" (Ott 1996), and refers to its traditional use in medicinal divination (learning the cause or identification of an illness).

I began hearing a “whoosh” sound. It “felt” windy as though I were at the center of a strong vortex. I then saw the swirling blackness beneath me start to pull and stretch in pointed pillars soaring up, moving counter clockwise and wrapping tighter around me from right to left. Things seemed to expand and contract while the huge pieces of shiny black fabric fanned and folded around me. The colors behind the black veil of void were amazing, and I had a strange feeling there were others “out there”. I think I experienced the presence of a guide that I cannot visually describe. But I was being told to follow past the void and into the puzzle of color. The entity or guide soon disappeared between two of the huge pillars, and I was left alone in a complete void.
